Diverse Careers in Cognitive Science
Despite the many theoretical and applied contributions of cognitive science, aspiring cognitive scientists and early career researchers lack a centralized resource to explore different career pathways in the field, and are often limited by their personal network. This session takes the form of a panel discussion with four speakers, each of whom are successful cognitive scientists in different professional settings, and come from different academic and cultural backgrounds. Our primary goal is to discuss diverse pathways and careers within cognitive science, and how an early career researcher from anywhere in the world may systematically approach these paths. Each speaker will share their own journey into cognitive science, with specific focus on the challenges they faced, the resources they made use of, and the possibilities they considered as they advanced in their careers. In particular, we focus on career trajectories of both North American as well as international scientists, in an effort to showcase the diversity of career experiences, academic, and cultural backgrounds within cognitive science. We believe that diversity is often multifold, and we hope that our session can reflect this through our speakers’ identities and journeys, and also spark broader interest in cognitive science among early career researchers from underrepresented communities.
